Apple to Enhance Support for Third-Party iPhone Displays and Batteries

Apple has announced significant updates aimed at improving compatibility with third-party displays and batteries, expected to roll out later this year. These changes are designed to enhance the repairability and longevity of iPhones, aligning with Apple's broader commitment to sustainability and device support.

True Tone Support for Third-Party Displays

One of the major updates is the extension of True Tone functionality to third-party iPhone screens. True Tone, a feature that adjusts the display's color balance to match ambient lighting, has traditionally been disabled for non-Apple screens due to calibration concerns. Later this year, users with third-party displays will be able to enable True Tone, although the performance might vary compared to original Apple displays. Users will also have the option to deactivate True Tone if the experience does not meet their expectationsโ€‹.

Battery Health Metrics for Third-Party Batteries

Apple will also start displaying battery health metrics for third-party batteries. This includes information such as maximum capacity and cycle count, which are currently only available for Apple-certified batteries. However, Apple will include a disclaimer noting that it cannot verify the accuracy of these metrics for third-party components. This move aims to provide users with more information about their device's health while also encouraging the use of parts that meet stringent safety standardsโ€‹.

Support for Used Genuine Parts

Starting this fall, customers and independent repair providers will be able to use used genuine Apple parts for repairs. This process will ensure full functionality and security, similar to new genuine parts. Apple will expand its Self Service Repair program, which supports 40 Apple products in 33 countries and regions, providing access to manuals, genuine parts, and toolsโ€‹.

Activation Lock and Parts and Service History

To deter theft, Apple will extend its Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts, blocking parts from lost or stolen devices. Additionally, the Parts and Service history feature in iOS will now show whether a part is new or used, providing transparency to device ownersโ€‹.
